TREKKING IN NEPAL/
Annapurna Region
:
THE ROYAL TREK: 4 DAYS
This
is a short four-day trek in the hills surrounding the
Pokhara region. Prince Charles of the United Kingdom and
Prince Gyanendra (now the King) of Nepal had initiated the
trek. Hence it was christened as the Royal Trek. It is an
easy trek offering excellent views of the mountains. The
trek leads through several villages and hamlets with their
diverse local customs, dances, folklore and architecture.
ANNAPURNA FOOTHILLS TREK: 08
DAYS
It is a highly enjoyable low elevation trek
passing through the stunning countryside in the Pokhara
region. The trek transverses varied terrain with magnificent
mountain views and interesting villages. Few places in the
world have such a splendid variety of natural beauty as the
Annapurna region
and therefore, you will not be surprised to learn that this
is the most popular trekking region, attracting over 75% of
all trekkers.
The Annapurna
foothills trek passes through an area with a rare combination
of snow-capped peaks, crystal clear lakes, and turbulent
rivers with deep gorges, Tibetan monasteries, hot springs,
and picturesque villages inhabited by friendly Nepalese
people. This route is highly recommended both for the first
timers and experienced trekkers alike.
ANNAPURNA SANCTUARY TREK:
13 DAYS - Moderate to
strenuous:
The Annapurna Sanctuary area, sacred to the local inhabitants
and treasured as a spiritual refuge long before the first
trekkers arrived, is a natural amphitheatre ringed by
Annapurna South and I, Varahashikhar, Gangapurna and
Machhapuchhre. It serves as the Base Camp for expeditions
and is a favorite destination for trekkers and mountain
lovers. Starting from Pokhara, you climb to Naudanda (nine
hills) and gain elevation gradually through Ghandrung and
Chhomrong. Then follow the Modi Khola valley through thick
bamboo and rhododendron forests to the Annapurna Base Camp
at 3963m. A slightly different return route through
Landrung, Dhampus and Hyangjas's Tibetan Refugee Camp
confronts you to a mix of cultures, quite possibly
unparalleled on any other trek.
The region falls within the Annapurna Conservation Area, a
project for environmental and cultures protection,
accommodating both native and visitor needs.
ANNAPURNA TREK: 21 DAYS
- Moderate to strenuous:
The Annapurna region is the most varied of Nepal's popular
trekking destinations. It harbors an incredible array of
tropical to alpine flora and fauna, an ever-changing
tapestry of lowland Aryans to highland Mongoloid peoples and
constant close-up views of the Annapurna peaks. The
Annapurna region is bounded by Marsyangdi River in the east
and the fascinating Kali Gandaki River in the west. It
boasts of the deepest gorge in the world. Within 40 miles
between the two rivers, there are 12 mountains higher than
7000m, and many others above 6000m. Starting from lower
altitudes, treks in this region pass through lush
agricultural lands, which eventually unroll to green
terraced fields and occasionally giving way to high, arid
desert landscapes. As the land and the people change so does
the dominant religion, from Hinduism in the lowlands to
Buddhism in the higher reaches.
Owing to the highway and air services linking
Kathmandu and Pokhara,
the Annapurna region renowned for classic treks, is
relatively easy to access. In addition to the
incredible views of some
of the tallest Himalayan mountain peaks, this popular trek
offers the most diversity as compared to any other trek in
Nepal. This trek crisscrosses through Gurung villages, full
bloom Rhododendron (Nepal's national flower) forest, Tibetan
monasteries and a splendid variety of natural beauty.
Maximum elevation on this trek is 3,939m.
ANNAPURNA CIRCUIT TREK:
29 DAYS - Strenuous
A classic Himalayan trek with all that trekking
in Nepal has to offer — a high mountain pass, the world's
deepest valleys, the high and wild desert plateau of western
Tibet, monasteries, pristine forests and people as diverse
as Tibetan Buddhist lamas and Hindu villagers.
This great circuit of
the Annapurnas begins at Begnas Tal and climbs through
terraced hillsides and wooded ridges as you ascend the
Marsyangdi Valley, where
Manaslu, Himalchuli and Lamjung peaks tower above as you
walk by. Forest gives way to high altitude meadows and
windswept ridges as you enter the region of Manang — the
first real slice of Tibetan culture and landscape. The pace
of walking slows to allow for safe acclimatisation and a
day's rest in the tiny village of
Manang
allows time to explore the great glacier of Gangapurna and to
prepare for the crossing of famed Thorong La Pass (5395m).
The rewards for your efforts in reaching the top are
extraordinary — a view south across the entire
Annapurna range, north onto the wild
plateau of western Tibet and west across the forbidden land
of Mustang.
A well-earned rest day
at the small
village of Muktinath
on the western side of Thorong La allows time to recuperate
and to explore the hallowed Vishnu temple of
Jiwala Mayi before
walking back to Pokhara down the spectacular Kali
Gandaki Valley — the
deepest gorge on earth — with
Annapurna
I and Dhaulagiri
soaring above.
This trek is one of best
in the
Himalayas, a true classic.

physical beauty along the Jomsom Trek is breathtaking. The

rhododendrons to rocky cliffs and desert. The trail follows
the Kali Gandaki
River. The Kali Gandaki is a quarter of a mile wide riverbed
and during the summer monsoon is filled with rainwater and
