TREKKING IN NEPAL/
North of Kathmandu
:
NORTH OF KATHMANDU:
The
Langtang-Helambu-Gosainkunda region is easily accessible from
Kathmandu. Each destination is most rewarding for those with
limited time, as one can cover any of the areas in one week to
ten days time. A three-week trip could cover all three but
would involve crossing high mountain passes. Although the
Himalayan views are not quite as spectacular as in the
Annapurna or Khumbu region, they too leave an unforgettable
impression. In addition, the trails are less crowded and the
people are friendly. In all of these regions, food and lodging
are available along the route, except for a few passes.
LANGSHISHA
ESCAPADE: 15 DAYS
Ave. Moderate - Maximum Elevation: 4,084m
Starting from Kathmandu you drive
for about seven hours in a Land Rover to Syabrubesi. From
there you continue on foot for a little while to camp at
Sherpa Gaon. From Sherpa Gaon the route proceeds northwest
towards Kyanjin Gompa (3479m) via Bagar. All throughout the
Langtang Himal dominate the skyline with Langtang Lirung at an
impressive 7246m. Upon reaching Kyanjin Gompa you can hike for
a day to Langshisha Glacier (4084m). The following day, a
day's hike reaches Yala, whilst upon return you could visit
the Monastery at Kyanjin and the government-owned cheese
factory built with Swiss assistance. The factory utilises milk
from a cross between a Yak and a cow to produce cheese, which
is supplied to Kathmandu and the surrounding areas. The return
route differs slightly, as it goes via Lama Hotel and
Syabrubesi from where you drive back to Kathmandu. This trek
goes across the pleasant valley at the base camp, where a
glacier ends. Maximum elevation is 4,480m.

HELAMBU, PANCH
POKHARI & JUGAL HIMAL TREK: 19 DAYS
Mod. - Strenuous - Max. Elevation: 3,884m. - Season: Spring,
Autumn
Helambu, which lies to north of
Kathmandu is an area inhabited by the Sherpas. This
middle-hill Sherpa village is rich in culture. The language,
culture and attire of the Sherpas of this region are different
from those inhabiting Solukhumbu.
During the full moon in June/July
thousands of devotees come to Panch Pokhari, the five holy
lakes at 4050m. The towering Jugal Himal is a chain of peaks,
inclusive of the magnificent Dorje Lakpa (6966m), Madiya
(6257m), Phurbi Chhyachu (6637m). Despite its proximity to
Kathmandu, it requires a long uphill climb from the south
through a remote and off-beaten track.

KATHMANDU VALLEY ROUND TREK: 08 DAYS
Moderate - Max.
Elevation: 2984m. - Seasons: Spring, Autumn
This is an easy trek taking you along the rims of Kathmandu
valley offering distant views of snowy mountains, typical
Nepali countryside, a view of Nepali life and culture,
interaction with the locals as you pass through their village.
This trek is best suited for those who enjoy outdoor camping
but who do not have enough time for longer treks into the high
mountains.
Drive to the trailhead at Budhanilkantha and then hike uphill
for two to three hours until reaching Nange Gumba, a Buddhist
nunnery. A further two-hour trek takes one to the special
campsite below Shivapuri. All along the way you have
spectacular views of the mountains. On day two, we trek to
beautiful Mulkharka and spend the second night. On day three
we trek through of the scenic routes to reach Nagarkot, which
offers the best vintage point for a panoramic view of the
mountains.
The Times Magazine December 2001 issue describes, "In Nagarkot
you can see the majesty of the mountains without suffering the
ill effects of a trek. Besides, it's a great weekend getaway
in the foothills, above the clouds but not quite into thin
air." After sunset, we drive back to Kathmandu.
